【英语多益通】三句英文看《白宫末日》

好莱坞每隔一段时间就要让美国白宫倒下！《ID4星际终结者》里，外星人的巨型飞碟在白宫正上方把它轰为平地。不久前的《平面攻占：倒数救援》（Olympus Has Fallen）里，白宫被北韩恐怖份子攻占。如今暑假第一档，好莱坞又在《白宫末日》（White House Down）里，把这世界权势顶峰的椭圆型办公室再炸一次。
你看了7月初上档的《白宫末日》（White House Down）吗？它的英文故事情节（storyline）只有三句。看完电影再来看英文版的故事情节，听起来比看电影还刺激！
Capitol Policeman John Cale has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer.
这句话是说，国会警察John Cale要申请他的梦幻工作，想要成为保护美国总统James Sawyer的特勤随扈，但是面试后被拒绝。Capitol Hill是美国的「国会山庄」，也是美国的国会所在地，所以Capitol Policeman是保护国会议员的警察系统。而secret service是指美国总统身边的特别勤务中队，简称特勤。
此外，你如果知道美国NBA职篮的奥运梦幻球队称为dream team，那你应该不难猜出dream job是「梦幻工作」。「deny、protect」这些字该学！
deny (v.) 拒绝；否认protect (v.) 保护、防护
Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group.
这句话是说，他不要让他的小女儿因这个消息而失望，于是他带她去参观白宫导览，而此时这个建筑物正被一群重装部队攻占。“down”虽然是「下」，但它也有「情绪低落、消沈」之意，而let down就是「使失望」。“complex”当形容词时，有「复杂的」之意，但是当名词用可以指「综合大楼」、「综合建筑群」，在此句中是指白宫这个复合式的建筑物。“arm”虽是「手臂」，但是古代人类尚没有真正的武器时，人的手臂就是最基本直接的武器，所以heavily armed是指「以重装备武器配备的」。
但是本句最经典的是它连接句子的方式，实际上连接了以下这三句：
A. He does not want to let down his little girl with the news.
B. He takes her on a tour of the White House.
C. The complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group.
你还记得「分词构句」吧！当两个句子用连接词连接时，如果两句的主词相同，可以省略掉一个主词，并将其后的动词改为分词，这是分词构句的主要精神。在此故事情情节的第二句中，用的即是分词构句。
上述A、B句是用「分词构句」连接，形成「Not wanting to let down his…」，分词构句的否定要将not搬到句首；而B、C句是用连接词when来连接，形成「…White House, when the complex is overtaken…」。组合之后，构成了这个storyline（故事情节）里，颇有层次感的好句。
Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.
这句话是说：「现在，随着政府陷入混乱以及时间即将用尽，要由Cale来拯救总统、他的女儿以及这国家。」
你记得这种「With his help, I did it.」的句型吧！它是「借由他的帮忙，我办到了！」，用的是「With + 名词（子句），S+V.」（随着…、用…）的句型！而本故事情节第三句用的也是这种句型，只是把fall改为falling动名词，即成为名词子句。“chaos”这个字该学，读音很重要，有两个母音，读做[ˋkeɑs]。
以上三句就是哥伦比亚电影公司暑假第一炮《白宫末日》（White House Down）的电影情节（storyline）：

【解析】以下哪个部份是此篇故事情节所提到的？正确答案是(A)，因为他是国会警察，又以当总统随扈为梦幻工作。答案(B)是他的婚姻、答案(C)是他的导游、答案(D)是他的手臂健康问题，这些皆未提及，倒是tour与arm的字眼曾于文中出现过。
