【英语多益通】加州建高铁 洛城到旧金山3小时

很难想像，强大且富裕的美国竟然没有高铁？是的，汽车工业甚为发达的美国，今年2015年1月初才在加州，进行第一条高速铁路的「破土（groundbreaking）」典礼。反观台湾，造就台北－高雄一日生活圈的「高铁」，却面临破产危机。如果当真发生，政府将出资四千五百亿「购回」高铁，转为国营。负责建造美国第一条高铁的加州高铁局（California High Speed Rail Authority），在它的简介里，告诉加州州民3个理由，为什么最富庶的加州需要第一条高铁。
1. California high-speed rail will connect the mega-regions of the state, contribute to economic development, create jobs and preserve agricultural lands.（加州高速铁路将连接本州的超级特区，对经济发展有所贡献，创造就业机会，以及保护农业用地。）
加州是美国第三大州，地形狭长约1,200余公里。有Golden State（黄金之州）之称而自豪的加州，辖区庞大，所以概分南、北加州。这条高铁将可以连结超级经济地区（mega-regions），对经济发展做出贡献，而且可以避免太多的公路而污染农地。看懂这第一句，你可以熟悉以下这3个重要的多益测验核心字汇：
