【英语多益通】台积电赴美设厂 扩大产能的英文是？

在新冠肺炎疫情的垄罩下，「世界工厂」中国的封城与停工，冲击全球电子业原先布局日。苹果（Apple）近期秘密扩大来台投资，于龙潭兴建新厂，台积电（TSMC）日前也评估将进驻美国亚利桑那州，就让我们透过这个话题，来学学相关的多益单字吧！
高阶的Advanced
近日台积电宣布，将在美国亚利桑那州投入120亿美元的资金建造5奈米晶圆厂，并计划于2024年开始量产。这个消息对于川普政府肯定是一项利多，也符合他之前所说，希望关键技术（critical technology）元件在美国生产的目标。
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. announced its plan to build an advanced chip factory in Arizona. The construction of the plant is slated to start next year.（台积电宣布将在美国亚利桑那州建造先进晶圆厂的计划，并预计明年开工。）
advanced在此当形容词，解释为「高阶的；先进的」，譬如「进阶的课程」就可以用advanced courses。由于台积电的晶片属于高科技技术，因此可用advanced来形容，此外，「先进的」或「尖端的」同义词也可用cutting-edge。
The company uses cutting-edge technology in producing this portable device.（这个公司运用尖端科技制造这行动装置。）
advance亦可当动词或名词，有「进步；晋级；扩增」的意思。
The use of augmented reality (AR) is one of the important medical advances.（AR扩增实境的运用在医学上是一项重要进展。）
If you pass the test, you can advance to the next level.（如果你通过考试，就可以晋级。）
在工作上的「晋升」也可用名词advancement，也就是promotion的意思。
When looking for a job, some people prefer employee advancement opportunities to salary.（在找工作时，有些人偏好晋升的机会而非在意薪水。）
另外，plant这个名词除了大家所熟悉的「植物」外，另一个重要的意思是「工厂」，如核能电厂nuclear power plant，制造厂manufacturing plant。
The company, headquartered in Hsinchu, operates several assembly plants overseas. （总公司位于新竹的这家公司在海外也有几个组装厂。）
生产Generate
据报导，台积电在美国建厂，不但能帮美国扩增（expand）半导体的产能（capacity），还能吸引高科技人才并增加当地的就业机会。台积电表示，亚利桑那州5奈米厂的兴建，将会为当地带来超过1600个就业机会。
According to TSMC, the plan will generate more than 1600 high-tech jobs.（据台积电表示，该计划将创造超过1600个高科技就业机会。）
generate当动词为「产生；创造」的意思，同义字可以用create、produce来代换。
The movie, Inception, has generated a lot of interests in exploring the potentials of dreams.（电影《全面启动》让人们对探索梦的潜力产生浓厚兴趣。）
扩厂、扩充的「扩大」可以用expand，名词为expansion。
We just finished our office expansion and the new office looks amazing.（我们办公室的扩大工程刚完成，新办公室看起来的确很棒。）
要注意的是，别搞混了expand和extend这两个字。expand通常是「大小、面积」等的「扩充、变大」；而extend通常是指「长度」或「时间」上的「延长」，名词是extension，譬如电话分机就可用extension number，延长保固则是extended warranty。
We’re going to hold a meeting tomorrow to discuss ways to expand our market share.（我们明天要开会讨论如何扩大我们的市占率。）
Mary has enjoyed her trip in Bangkok so she decided to extend her stay for one more week.（Mary在曼谷玩得很开心，因此她决定再多停留一周。）
名词capacity有好几个重要的字意，包括「产能；容量；（人）的能力」等。
The government hopes that major corporations can increase their manufacturing capacities on home soil.（政府希望大型企业能增加其在国内的产能。）
The new stadium is reported to have a capacity of 30,000 people. （新的体育场据报导说可容纳3万人。）
Jim’s father had a stroke last year and, as a result, his mental capacity was greatly affected. （Jim的父亲去年中风后，心智能力大受影响。）
展示Display
除了台积电外，据传苹果也秘密扩大来台投资，在既有厂区旁再建造生产显示器的新厂，扩大营运；而这些显示器未来将供应苹果的iPhone、iPad等产品使用。
It is reported that Apple Inc. plans to invest $330 million on a new plant manufacturing mini-LED and micro-LED displays in northern Taiwan. （据报导，苹果计划在北台湾投资3.3亿美元设立新厂，生产Mini LED及Micro LED显示器。）
名词display在这里指的是「显示器」，然而在多益情境中，更常用的意思是「展示」，可做动词或名词。
Several of Monet’s paintings are currently on display in the art gallery.（莫内的画作目前正在美术馆中展出。）
As a CEO, Mr. Seinfeld clearly displays his excellent communication and leadership skills. （作为CEO，Seinfeld 展现出他卓越的沟通和领导能力。）
不论是台积电去美国设厂或是苹果来台建厂，这些好消息都实实在在地展现了台湾在科技产业的实力。
